SYA 6th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Tryouts Begin Oct 3

SYA will be hosting tryouts for the 6th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team this week. SYA Travel (or Select) basketball teams will typically have two practices a week and will usually play one game a week in Fairfax County gyms. The actual season will begin in November, but teams will begin practicing in mid-October based on their availability from fall league sports.

Most high school basketball players receive much of their exposure to competitive basketball through the travel basketball program - SYA alumni include April Robinson (West Springfield '12, Washington Post All Met); Caroline Coyer (Oakton '12, Washington Post All Met - Villanova commit), Erin Meador (Centreville '11, District/Regional Honors 4 Year Varsity Letterman - US Naval Academy Basketball); Jessica McNamara (Westfield '11, District Honors 4 Year Varsity Letterman - Virginia Tech Softball); Dani Knox (Westfield '11, District Honors 4 Year Varsity Letterman - US Coast Guard Academy Basketball); Shelby Romine (Westfield '10, Regional/District Honors 4 Year Varsity Letterman - Bucknell University Basketball) and numerous other high school varsity athletes.

This winter, SYA plans to host two travel teams for the 6th grade year group (D1 & D2). Players must be residents of Fairfax County to be eligible for SYA teams. If you have any questions, please contact me at edknox@mac.com.

All players must attend at least two of the scheduled tryouts (if you have major conflicts or are currently sidelined with an injury, but are interested in participating, PLEASE contact me).

Coventry Games (Jul 15/16/17) and More - URGENT!

Just wanted to remind you that you must confirm your hotel reservations for the Coventry Games by noon on 24 Jun (FRIDAY). As of today, most of you have not done so.

I have already registered the team for the games, so hopefully, most of you plan to participate. This will be a GREAT tournament and is a statewide event so we will really need to be at our strongest to be competitive. However, I believe we have the right team to do well.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE confirm with me by Wednesday night (22 Jun) whether or not you plan to participate in Roanoke - I also need to know whether or not you plan to play on July 9/10 in Baltimore (as a tune up to the games). Note: Roanoke is an overnight trip and Baltimore is not.

Remember, our summer season begins tomorrow night - Schedule for our first three games:

2011 Chantilly High School Girls Basketball Camps (Open to campers age 8-14):

Week 1: June 27 - July 1 (9:00 am - 2:30 pm)

Week 2: July 5 - July 8 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm)

Cost is $150.00. (Note-Camp will not run on July 4th. It will be held Tuesday thru Friday for an extended hour each day.)

*SPECIAL: DAY CAMP ONE AND TWO! Attend both sessions of CBC for a special price of $260.00 ($40 off)

As with all things, we need to make a change for this weekend.
Unfortunately, there was a mix up at George Mason. However, as it ends
up, there were no other U10 teams coming and we've already played most
of the other U11B teams that will be there, so this is not such a bad
thing.

Right now, I'm trying to secure a venue - It looks like we'll either
play in Fredrick, MD (up 270 and about an hour drive - a medal
tournament that I would like to attend) or North of DC (also about an
hour). Hopefully, everyone can still support the tournament - maybe we
can have lunch at Dave and Buster's!

The U10 WHITE will play its final tournament Jun 4 & Jun 5. We will
play two morning games on Saturday at Mt Vernon and two games on
Sunday (most likely AM, but still TBD) - Sunday's games will be in the
area as well.

As a side note, U10 BLACK will play Jun 11 & 12 (and possibly Jun 10 -
Friday night) - looks like we will be in the area.

I will probably need some help from BLACK since I know we have soccer
players and there may be some girls who will miss - PLEASE LET ME KNOW
IF YOU CAN PLAY THIS WEEKEND!

Everyone is welcome to every practice this week (WHITE please try to
make at least two if you can) - here's what we have - looks like we
have Westfield three times and this is great for those who can come -

Weather has moved us to Virginia Run tonight - I couldn't work out the
shooting clinic, but we will get something scheduled soon.

I'll be there 6:30-8:30 for anyone who can make it - lots of shooting!

to accommodate our soccer and lacrosse players, I'm expecting Friday

Great Weekend -A few Announcements

First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all of our Mustang Moms - I hope
everyone is having an enjoyable Sunday!

This weekend, U10 BLACK had some great games at George Mason. Each one
was highly competitive, and once again, everyone improved with every
game.

As far as the schedule, Cardinal will not be hosting a tournament this
weekend - this means that BOTH WHITE and BLACK will play at George
Mason on May 20, 21, and 22 (WHITE will not play this weekend). I
need to know your scheduling conflicts for those three days and also
need to know who is available to play on Friday evening (May 20).

We WILL NOT have practice tomorrow (Monday, 9 May or Tuesday, 10 May).
However, we will continue as usual for the remainder of the week. We
will focus on shooting all week. I am trying to put together a
shooting clinic for next weekend (hosted by Mandy Ronay, a
professional basketball trainer) and need to know is available - there
will be no cost to the participants - I just need to know your
preferred day (Fri, Sat, or Sun) and preferred time (before noon,
after noon, after 5pm).

Again, both WHITE and BLACK have had two very nice weekends - let's
keep it going - even though we are not practicing Monday and Tuesday,
please work on lay-ups and form shooting!

See you on Wednesday (and don't forget to send me your availability
for May 20, 21, and 22!

GREAT WEEKEND - The Week Ahead...

First of all - U10 WHITE had a great weekend going 3-1 at Cardinal. The girls came away with two victories on Saturday, including a great 2nd game against the Classics. Sunday started with a last second win over the Red Tide followed by a tough back-to-back game loss to the U10 Maryland Comets (#3 in the state of Maryland) - the game with the Comets was just a few points difference until the last two minutes when we just ran out of gas. I'm sure everyone slept well after these games.

Thanks to all the parents for getting up so early for the weekend. I've posted some photos on the blog - in these photos you can really see how hard everyone was playing - you can also see the form in some of the shooting - something that we will continue to work on :)

Good Weekend - Have a Great Spring Break!

Good job on Saturday - Thanks for make the trip to Mt Vernon (particularly those who made the EARLY AM edition!) You played hard and everyone is getting better. Keep working on ball handling and playing with your head up.

No practice this week (Fairfax County spring break) and no games next weekend. We will be back in the gym on Monday, 25 April - the current plan is that WHITE will play 30 Apr - 1 May and BLACK will play 7-8 May. PLEASE let me know availability and potential conflicts so I can try to make sure that we'll be able to support both weekends.

Fairfax County Police Warning for Route 7100!

Brian Kelly sent this to me, and I wanted to pass it on - ESPECIALLY if you plan to take 7100 to Mt Vernon tomorrow (even though the campaign doesn't formally begin until Sunday)...

50 MEANS 50

The Traffic Division of the Operations Support Bureau and the Patrol Division of the Fairfax County Police Department, in cooperation with the Virginia State Police, will launch a two-week initiative, "50 Means 50", along Route 7100, the Fairfax County Parkway. This campaign kicks off on Sunday, April 17 and targets aggressive and reckless driving; including speeding, texting while driving, following too closely, and failure to pay full time and attention on theFairfax County Parkway. Motor squad officers along with patrol officers from several district stations throughout the county and Virginia State Troopers will be assigned specific enforcement duties along the parkway.

A variety of vehicles will be utilized including: motorcycles, Mustangs, Camaros, Impalas, pick-up trucks and other unmarked and marked police vehicles. The stepped-up enforcement will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until its conclusion on Saturday, April 30. The intent of the initiative is to reduce the overall average speed on the parkway and to reduce the number of property damage, injury, and fatal crashes, making the parkway a safer place for all.

Tonight at Virginia Run

Coaches Jones, Francis, and Wolin will be there at the start of
practice tonight - I might be on time, but might not be there until
7:10 or so. However, we will still have optional skills at 6:30pm,
followed by practice at 7pm - we will probably go until 8:45 tonight.

Thursday & Friday, if the weather is nice, we will practice at
Westfield HS (otherwise back at Virginia Run on each night) - I'll try
to send something out by 5pm to let you know the status.

Our Saturday schedule should come out sometime tonight - I think we'll
have at least 8 players from each team - again, I'm fairly certain
that we will play in the morning (Saturday only).

Also, after spring break, please start brining a jump rope with you to
every practice!

You played very hard and faced some very good competition this weekend - everyone is getting better. Just keep working hard and it will all start to come together quickly. Please work on one step lay-ups and form shooting EVERY DAY. Lay-ups were the difference in at least three games this weekend.

Our schedule this week is 6:30-7 optional skills, 7-8:40 practice.

Practice & the Week Ahead (3/21)

First of all - I thought everyone did a nice job at the Jamboree. The girls played hard, and I'm sure many of them slept very well on Saturday night (I know I did). I know there was a lot of confusion yesterday, particularly for the WHITE team, however, this was all expected - we had a lot of inexperience on the court with that particular group. I threw the girls into the fire so they could get a feel for what to expect and the most important thing for everyone who attended was that they had an opportunity to mix it up and to see the speed of the game. My wife took some pictures if anyone is interested and they are available on line (she will continue to take them for the remainder of the season).

I realize that AAU is a new experience for many of the players and as I told them on Saturday, this game is much faster than anything most of them have ever experienced. SInce we didn't have any time outs, it was difficult to make any adjustments though the course of the games. However, all in all, I thought the girls did some very nice things and I think all of them will learn a lot this spring. We will really focus on fundamentals and will work to help them develop their skill sets.

Now to some administrative stuff...

However, please note that due such diverse schedules, many of the girls will practice together. The best way to get there is to take 7100 (I would try to avoid 495 to Rt 1 - Rt 1 gets crazy, especially in the afternoon). It should take about 45 minutes to get there, but allow about an hour especially if it's your first time going there.

IMPORTANT: Please be at Mt Vernon High School at least 30 minutes prior to tipoff of your first game (if you're coming from lacrosse or soccer, do the best you can but please be safe! If you're ate, you'll be in the book and we'll get you in). All games will be played on Court 1 and we will wear BLACK. Games are 25 minutes long with running clock.

I should have a game schedule for this weekend sometime tonight - I'll be sending it out tomorrow morning.

Everyone has not yet filled out the survey so I'm going to make a stab at how to set up practice times. However, I really need everyone to fill out the online survey (http://www.aaugirlsbasketball.org/ ) as I will need to turn some of that information into the county). So far, I only have information for the following players:

This Friday, I would really like to get as many of the players who told me that they could play in the tournament come to practice at the times listed below - If you are not playing but would like to attend, please feel free to join either session:

We've have some nice practices to get us started - we're spending a lot of time on the fundamentals (really want to get those layups working). I have a lot of information, so for the remaining practices, we're going to be working on some team elements to prepare for Saturday. I'm going to build rosters for this weekend, and should have it available by Thursday.

Mustangs Finish 2nd in FFS Winter League

Mustangs finished 2nd in this winter's FFS winter league. Playing against older players all season, they did an excellent job. We look forward to seeing them in the upcoming spring season.

REMINDER - Northern Region Championship on Monday Night

Just a quick reminder that West Springfield will play TC in the
Northern Region Final on MONDAY NIGHT (2/28) at ROBINSON HS at 6PM.

This game features some of the finest basketball players in the area
including West Springfield's April Robinson (WFBC & SYA alumni),
Jordan Miller (WFBC alumni), and Amy Berglund (2011 WFBC).

It should be a great game - Hope to see you all there!

Unfortunately - I Don't Think We have a Game

Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get a game this weekend.
There are so few teams in the league and although I tried to get a
game for us, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. However,
next weekend I'm hoping we can get a final game. Next weekend, the
Northern Region HS have their championships - It's always a lot of fun
and if possible, I'd like to see if we can go see the game. I'll have
more details soon.

Information Regarding Inclement Weather

As we look at the possibility for inclement weather during the upcoming week, here's some information:

If Fairfax schools are CLOSED on the game day, all games on that day are cancelled. If Fairfax schools are opening late, games are to be played as scheduled. However, if schools are closed on Friday (early or all day), activities are NOT NECESSARILY cancelled on the Saturday or Sunday - Please note that county Games in Loudoun, Gainesville, Arlington, and Alexandria may be cancelled even if Fairfax facilities are open.

When Fairfax County Public Schools have a schedule change (closing or delay) due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the information is communicated as soon as the decision is made in these ways:

Recorded on the FCPS hot line, 800-839-FCPS (3277)
